It Can't Happen Here - Again, a reading based on Nobel prizewinner Sinclair Lewis' 1936 play, It Can't Happen Here, will be performed in Petaluma on Thursday, October 10, 6:30 pm at Aqus Cafe. The original play, which was written as a warning about the rise of fascism, was based on Lewis' 1935 novel of the same name, which is still in print and as recently as 2017 was on Amazon's list of Top Ten best sellers. The 28-minute performance features local readers portraying historical figures including incendiary "Radio Priest" Father Charles Coughlin; journalist Dorothy Thompson, who was expelled from Germany after belittling Adolf Hitler; wisecracking writer Dorothy Parker; gossip columnist and news commentator Walter Winchell; and President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who was running for re-election while confronting the threat of fascism. Admission is free.
